MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University women's volleyball team dropped their opening game in the Holiday Inn West Bronco Thanksgiving Challenge to Western Michigan, 3-0.

"We made a lot of unforced errors this evening," said interim head coach Erica Heisser. "It was something that we could have controlled, but we failed to do so."

Forced into duty at setter, Hailey Viola recorded her first career double-double with 20 kills and 10 digs, while Leslie Bielski led the squad with eight kills.

"Hailey did a great job today and showed great leadership skills," said Heisser.

Freshman Tiara Russell opened the scoring in the first frame with a kill off an assist from Katie Vancura. Following three straight Western Michigan kills, the Broncos took a 3-1 advantage and lengthened their lead to 9-3 on a kill by Katie Eberling. WMU closed out the scoring 25-17 in the first stanza. Marquette took an early 2-0 lead in the second set on a kill from Ciara Jones and a Bronco attack error. Western Michigan would go on to win the next five points and take control of the set, winning 25-17.

After Western got out to a 5-2 lead in the third set, the Golden Eagles responded to tie the set at 5-5 on a Bronco attack error.
