Marquette Falls to No. 7 Illinois, 3-0, in NCAA Second Round

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team fell to No. 7 Illinois, 25-13, 25-23, 25-22, Saturday evening at Huff Hall in Champaign, Ill., in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Championship.
The Golden Eagles end their season 24-11 overall and were led on the evening by 11 kills from junior middle hitter Danielle Carlson. Senior outside hitter Ciara Jones added 10 kills for MU as it hit just .157 as a team. Sophomore libero Julie Jeziorowski added 18 digs in the three-set sweep.
The Illini (29-4) were led by 10 kills from senior outside hitter Colleen Ward. Illinois used a balanced attack to hit .311 as a team while five players tallied at least five kills.
The Illini used a 15-3 run midway through the opening set to take an 18-8 lead before cruising to a 25-13 victory. The Golden Eagles last lead in the first was at 5-4 on an attack error by Bartsch as U of I hit .370 to open the match. Marquette hit -.067 in the first with 10 errors on 30 total attacks.
Illinois pulled out a tightly contested second set, 25-23, that featured 12 ties and a pair of lead changes. Marquette led the set 5-3, just as it did in the first, before Illinois jumped out to a 13-10 lead, its largest of the frame.
Illinois closed out the match with a 25-22 third set victory, in which Marquette held its last lead, 15-14 at the media timeout on a Carlson kill.
Illinois advances to the Gainesville, Fla., regional where it will face Ohio State on Friday, Dec. 9 in the regional semifinal.
